These seaweeds that Japanese women eat every day for a smooth menopause

These seaweeds that Japanese women eat every day for a smooth menopause

Summary

Seaweeds can help alleviate the main symptoms of menopause due to their exceptional density in calcium, phytoestrogens, iodine, and bioavailable minerals. A woman who regularly consumes wakame, spirulina, and kombu can meet a large portion of her calcium needs without dairy products — exactly what a post-menopausal skeleton requires. With over 18 years of experience at Biovie, and as a co-author with Aurélie of "Algues au quotidien" (Gallimard, 2024), I wanted to share with you what scientific data and our daily fieldwork teach us about themenopause diet and the role of seaweed.

If you are looking to Living well through menopause naturally, this article is made for you.

Why does menopause create such specific nutritional needs ?

In France, approximately 15 million women are affected by menopause or perimenopause. Among them, 70 to 80% suffer from hot flashes, and according to INSERM, 1 in 3 women will develop osteoporosis after the age of 50. These are not small numbers — and yet, the nutritional response to these issues often remains very insufficient.

What makes this period so special in terms ofmenopause diet, It is the speed at which the needs for certain micronutrients evolve, even though the intake often remains the same. That's where the problem lies. And that's exactly where a diet dense in micronutrients can play a crucial role.

The 5 Most Common Nutritional Deficiencies After 50 Years

At menopause, several nutrients become critical, often simultaneously:

  • Calcium Bone density begins to decline as early as perimenopause. The needs increase significantly, which conventional diet rarely covers without specific intention. The Calcium-rich foods without dairy for menopause — like seaweed — then become essential.
  • Iron : if the rules disappear, the reserves previously built up can quickly be depleted. The menopause fatigue natural remedy diet often starts here — provided you choose the right sources.
  • Magnesium : involved in more than 300 enzymatic reactions, it plays a role in sleep quality, stress management, and mood balance. A deficiency is often silent but very common after the age of 50.
  • Iodine : Thyroid slowdown affects 1 in 5 women after the age of 50. Iodine, in a bioavailable form and in adequate amounts, can contribute to the normal functioning of the thyroid at this pivotal time.
  • Phytoestrogens : these plant molecules, present in the phytoestrogenic seaweeds Naturals gently bind to estrogen receptors. Their role in maintaining a healthy hormonal balance during menopause is documented in the international scientific literature.

Here are the five nutritional pillars to monitor.

What the decrease in estrogen really does to your body

The gradual decline of estrogen not only affects the reproductive sphere. It has measurable impacts on the entire body:

  • The bones : estrogens inhibit bone resorption. Without them, bone mass erodes more quickly — this is the direct mechanism behind the increased risk of osteoporosis. The algae calcium osteoporosis represent one of the most suitable nutritional responses.
  • Metabolism : we often observe a Weight gain during menopause natural diet which becomes a central concern, with increased insulin resistance and a general slowdown of the basal metabolism.
  • The thyroid : The hormonal connections between estrogen and the thyroid are well established. Many women experience a progressive slowdown of the thyroid during this period, without necessarily identifying the cause.
  • The cardiovascular system : estrogens had a protective effect on the vascular walls. Their decrease alters certain lipid parameters and increases long-term risks.
  • Mood and sleep : the drop in estrogen affects serotonin, dopamine, and melatonin. Irritability, anxiety, and insomnia become frequent companions.

That's where a menopause diet without hormones, dense in natural micronutrients — such as the seaweed menopause — can play an important complementary role.

Which algae to choose according to your dominant symptom ?

This is the question I receive most often, and the answer really depends on what you prioritize. Here is a proposed distribution of the seaweed Menopause in practice, according to the most common needs:

  • Menopause diet hot flashes → spirulina + chlorella: natural phytoestrogens, chlorophyll, support for hormonal balance
  • Bone fragility / osteoporosis → wakame + kombu: up to 1,000 mg of calcium per 100 g, magnesium, boron
  • Intense fatigue, anemia → spirulina: 28 mg of iron per 100 g, the best source of plant-based iron Existing, complete proteins at 60-70%
  • Abdominal weight gain → wakame (fucoxanthin): thermogenesis, fiber, prolonged satiety
  • Thyroid slowdown → kombu, nori, wakame: bioavailable natural iodine
  • Dry skin, accelerated wrinkles → dulse + nori: collagen, trace elements, amino acids
  • Anxiety, sleep disorders → spirulina: tryptophan, magnesium, B vitamins

Spirulina and Menopause — Why This Microalgae Deserves a Daily Place

Honestly, if I had to choose only one algae to accompany menopause, it would probably be spirulina. Not because it works miracles — it doesn't — but because its nutritional profile is remarkably suited to the needs of this period.

It contains between 60 to 70% protein — more than any animal source. It contains 28 mg of iron per 100 g, making it one of the best sources of plant-based iron available. It provides natural phytoestrogens that can contribute to hormonal balance. And its tryptophan, a precursor of serotonin, can help with the normal functioning of mood and sleep quality.

By integrating the spirulina Menopause regularly can contribute to better tolerance to fatigue and a more stable mood. This is not a guaranteed result — each person is different — but it is consistent with what science tells us about these nutrients. A meta-analysis published in 2024 (PubMed compilation) suggests that spirulina could be effective in the context of post-menopausal metabolic syndrome (3).

Wakame: the seaweed that protects your bones 13 times better than animal milk

Dehydrated wakame contains approximately 1,000 mg of calcium per 100 g. Whole milk contains it 125 mg per 100 g. It is 13 times more. The CEVA (Center for the Study and Promotion of Algae) confirms this exceptional nutritional composition (4).

For a woman who reduces or avoids dairy products during menopause, wakame represents one of the Seaweed for women aged 50 years the most effective for contributing to the maintenance of normal bone structure. And this calcium is accompanied by magnesium, boron, and natural vitamin K2, all of which contribute to bone health.

The fucoxanthin from wakame is also being studied for its effect on abdominal adipose tissue — the weight gain that concerns so many menopausal women. To learn more, find all the benefits of wakame in our dedicated article.

One of our clients told us that she has incorporated miso into her Wakame benefits for women almost every noon, and have gradually observed less morning fatigue.

Chlorella: the little-known ally for hot flashes

The ChlorellaIs much less known than spirulina, and that's a shame. Its richness in chlorophyll gives it particular properties, notably its support for normal liver elimination functions.

This point is important during menopause. The liver plays a central role in hormonal metabolism — it processes estrogens and participates in their elimination. Data suggests that chlorophyll from chlorella may contribute to these normal liver functions, thereby helping to achieve better hormonal balance over time (2).

Documented testimonies report a gradual reduction in hot flashes in women undergoing regular chlorella treatment, with effects that can be observed starting from 20 to 24 days regular intake.

Kombu, nori, dulse: how to easily incorporate them into your cooking

These three superfoods for menopause are less publicized than spirulina but have their rightful place at the table:

  • Kombu : Simply add a piece to the pot when cooking your legumes (lentils, chickpeas). It makes them more digestible and enriches the broth with bioavailable natural iodine. This is an ancient Japanese technique. Alternatively, blend your fresh kombu and add it to your cooking. You can also use dehydrated kombu, which is more convenient.

  • Nori : in slices on a slice of almond and cucumber puree, or crumbled. Easy, quick, very subtle taste.

  • Dulse : sprinkled on a salad or steamed vegetables, in a soup. It crumbles like salt, provides amino acids, trace elements, and its light iodized flavor is pleasant and mild.

Edible seaweed vs "draining seaweed" in capsules — what is the real difference ?

This is a question that I find essential to address because the market is full of products sold under the name "algae" that actually have little to do with the seaweedFood products we offer.

The "draining" fucus capsules, "bladderwrack" capsules, and "slimming with seaweed" formulas found in supermarkets: these products use isolated, standardized extracts, often dried at high temperatures, and are formulated solely for a very targeted marketing benefit. Their bioavailability is very different from that of a whole seaweed, and their nutritional profile does not resemble that of a living edible seaweed.

The approach we have advocated at Biovie since 2007 is algae as a whole food. A low-temperature dried algae, certified organic and Ecocert, which preserves its complete nutritional matrix: vitamins, minerals, amino acids, pigments, fibers, polysaccharides. Extracts cannot replicate this matrix. It's the same difference as between an industrial fruit juice and the whole fruit eaten with gusto.

How do Japanese women experience menopause differently ?

It is the angle that fascinates me the most about this subject because it is both intuitive and solidly supported scientifically.

Japanese women consume on average 5 to 7 grams of seaweed per day. Wakame in the morning miso soup, kombu in the lunch broth, nori wrapped around the evening rice. It's not a dietary supplement for them: it's daily food for generations.

Comparative epidemiological studies show that these women exhibit 2 to 3 times fewer hot flashes that Western women (5). The Okinawa diet women longevity — which is the basis of the dietary model of Japanese centenarians — is precisely based on this daily consumption of seaweed during menopause, combined with fermented soy, a variety of vegetables, and very few ultra-processed products. Discover the dietary secret of Okinawa's centenarians in our dedicated article.

This rare nutritional combination provides natural phytoestrogens menopause, iodine (thyroid support), calcium (maintenance of normal bone structure), and fucoidan — a marine polysaccharide that is simply not found in typical Western diets.

Specifically, when I worked with Aurélie on our book "Seaweed in Everyday Life" (Gallimard, 2024), we were struck by the consistency between all this epidemiological data on Japan and what we observe daily with our clients in France. The connection is real, and it deserves to be highlighted.

Seaweed and the Thyroid at Menopause: What You Really Need to Know

I want to address this topic directly, because it's often the first objection I hear: "But I can't eat seaweed, I have thyroid problems."

Let me clarify two or three essential points about the Seaweed and thyroid health.

Spirulina does not contain iodine. She is therefore completely compatible with thyroid treatment, including levothyrox. If your hot flashes or menopause-related fatigue are prominent, you can start with spirulina with complete peace of mind.

Iodized seaweeds (wakame benefits for women, kombu, nori) contain bioavailable iodine. which can contribute to the normal functioning of the thyroid. For a sluggish thyroid — common during menopause — this is good news. The golden rule: gradual progression. Start once a week for the first week, then two to three times in the following weeks.

If you are undergoing levothyroxine treatment, Simply validate the addition of iodine-rich seaweed with your doctor before starting. Caution costs nothing, and your prescriber is best positioned to make adjustments if necessary.

How to incorporate seaweed into your diet during menopause — the Biovie protocol

The error I observe most often is wanting to change everything at once in one's menopause diet. We buy five different types of seaweed, we don't know what to do with them, and they end up at the back of a cupboard. The key — as with any dietary change — is gradualness.

Week 1 — soft start:

  • Monday: 1 teaspoon of spirulina menopause in your morning smoothie (banana + plant-based milk, optionally a spoonful of cocoa — and you won't taste the seaweed, it's almost undetectable)
  • Wednesday: a bowl of miso with wakame at noon — comforting, warm, calcium and iodine in one simple step
  • Friday: a dulse-beet salad, to gradually introduce it into your flavor palette

Starting from week 2:

  • Spirulina: 3 to 5 g per day (1 teaspoon) for a minimum 3-week course
  • Wakame: 2 to 3 times a week in cooking or in hot miso
  • Chlorella menopause : 1 to 3 g per day if hot flashes persist

Three quick recipes (5 minutes flat):

Anti-fatigue smoothie : 1 banana, 1 teaspoon of spirulina powder, 200 ml of plant-based milk (almond or oat), 1 tablespoon of hemp seeds. Blend. There you go: proteins, iron, natural phytoestrogens for menopause, all in two minutes.

Miso-wakame bowl for lunch : dissolve a spoonful of unpasteurized organic miso in 300 ml of hot water at a maximum of 45°C (not boiling, to preserve the enzymes), add 5 g of wakame flakes. Three minutes and it's ready. Calcium, iodine, natural probiotics.

Dulse as a seasoning : Sprinkle dulse flakes directly onto your evening salad. No cooking, no preparation. Five seconds.

Frequently Asked Questions About Seaweed and Menopause

Which algae is the most effective for relieving hot flashes during menopause ?

Spirulina and chlorella are the two algae that can best help alleviate hot flashes. Spirulina contains natural phytoestrogens, magnesium, and tryptophan, which support hormonal balance. Chlorella, with its chlorophyll and detoxifying properties, can help the liver better eliminate excess estrogen. Documented testimonials report a reduction as early as 20 to 24 days of regular treatment.

Are seaweeds dangerous for the thyroid during menopause ?

No, provided it is done gradually. Spirulina does not contain iodine and is compatible with thyroid treatments. Iodine-rich seaweeds (wakame, kombu, nori) can support a sluggish thyroid — common during menopause — but it is advisable to introduce them gradually: once a week the first week, then two to three times. If you are undergoing levothyrox treatment, consult your doctor before adding iodine-rich seaweeds.

How to incorporate seaweed into your diet during menopause without eating it morning, noon, and night ?

Three simple steps are enough: 1 teaspoon of spirulina in your morning smoothie (undetectable in a banana-cocoa mix), hot wakame miso for lunch two to three times a week, and dulse flakes sprinkled on your salads or eggs. This takes less than 5 minutes a day and already covers a large part of your calcium, iron, and mineral needs.

Does wakame really contain more calcium than milk ?

Yes. Dehydrated wakame contains about 1,000 mg of calcium per 100 g, compared to 125 mg for whole milk. It is one of the most concentrated plant sources of calcium, valuable for helping to maintain normal bone structure during menopause.

Why do Japanese women seem to suffer less from menopause ?

Epidemiological studies show that Japanese women experience two to three times fewer hot flashes. Their diet is rich in daily seaweeds (wakame, kombu, nori) providing phytoestrogens, iodine, calcium, and fucoidan — a rare combination in Western diets.

Can spirulina and chlorella be taken together during menopause ?

Yes, spirulina and chlorella are complementary and can be taken at the same time. Spirulina provides complete proteins, iron, and phytoestrogens. Chlorella complements with its chlorophyll, detoxifying action, and its content of B vitamins. A common protocol: 2 to 3 g of spirulina in the morning and 1 to 2 g of chlorella during a meal. Start gradually to allow your body to adapt.
