    Organic Spirulina Powder 500 g

Organic spirulina powder needs no introduction: this superfood has been in the spotlight for many years for its nutritional virtues and immune-supporting properties. It is the star of vegetarian and vegan diets, notably for its exceptional richness in plant-based protein.

🟢 What makes organic spirulina special

Spirulina is in fact a micro-algae, more precisely a microbial organism (cyanobacterium) with no individualised nucleus. Looked at closely, it has a spiral shape: that is where its name comes from. It appeared on Earth 3.5 billion years ago - and it developed extraordinary resilience to survive the deep climate changes that separate us from then.

It stands out for its high content of minerals and trace elements (iron, zinc, selenium) as well as vitamins (A, B, D, E). Rich in iron, it is favoured by women, who are most affected by anaemia. It contains 60 to 70% amino acids, three times more than lean meat! It is also packed with copper, zinc and magnesium, which contribute to the normal function of the immune system and to improved endurance. In concrete terms, it is one of the most concentrated sources of plant nutrients there is.

🟢 Why is our spirulina spray-dried?

Convection drying on trays, commonly used in small artisanal operations in France and elsewhere, has drawbacks linked to the length of the drying process. The work of Hélène Desmorieux, doctoral researcher at the LAGEP laboratory - jointly overseen by the Claude Bernard Lyon 1 University and the CNRS - shows that the best drying method for optimally preserving spirulina's nutrients is spray drying, recognised by Ecocert.

    > This atomisation method allows rapid dehydration of the algae while preserving their nutritional qualities. The spirulina is sprayed into a heated chamber where it meets hot air. The temperature is generally kept below 50 °C to avoid degrading nutrients and heat-sensitive enzymes.

🟢 How to take organic spirulina powder?

Spirulina powder can be taken at any time of day. We recommend avoiding it in the evening, as it can have a mild stimulating effect in some sensitive people.

Recommended daily dose: 3 g - the equivalent of one teaspoon, diluted in a fruit or vegetable juice, a smoothie, plant-based milk, a yoghurt...

To help your body absorb organic spirulina powder, combine it with vitamin C (lemon juice, for example). Using spirulina in cooking is also the best way to enjoy this superfood's benefits all year round - recipe ideas are plentiful, and its intense green colour delivers an instant wow effect!

    > Our organic spirulina is fat-soluble, meaning it dissolves easily in a preparation or a fatty liquid, and forms lumps in a liquid that is mostly water.

"Spirulina, a must-have of exceptional, raw quality. Thank you to Eric and Aurélie Viard."
Gael Vittoz, Biovie customer for over 15 years ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

    🟢 Frequently asked questions

How much spirulina powder per day?

The recommended dose is 3 g per day (about 1 teaspoon). For athletes or in cases of increased need (pregnancy, anaemia), some health professionals suggest up to 5 g/day. In all cases, start with 1 g/day and increase gradually to let the body adjust.

Can you take spirulina every day?

Yes, spirulina can be taken daily as part of a varied and balanced diet. The usual maintenance dose is 3 g per day; France's food safety agency (ANSES) considers an intake of up to 5 g per day to be generally well tolerated in healthy adults. For a prolonged course, choose a certified spirulina and ask a health professional for advice.

    Is spirulina dangerous?

Spirulina is generally very well tolerated. The main points to watch are product quality (uncertified spirulina may contain microcystins or heavy metals) and certain specific situations: autoimmune diseases, phenylketonuria, anticoagulant treatment. If in doubt, ask your doctor and refer to the assessment by ANSES.

When should you take spirulina powder?

In the morning or during the day, preferably before a meal. Avoid taking it in the evening - spirulina can have a mild stimulating effect in some sensitive people, which may disturb sleep.

How to mask the taste of spirulina powder?

Its pronounced marine taste is easily hidden in a banana-mango smoothie, an orange juice or a soy yoghurt. Its intense green colour, on the other hand, is harder to hide! Find our 12 tips to mask the taste of spirulina on our blog.

    🟢 Immune system and vitality

The antioxidants it contains in large amounts - mainly its blue pigment, phycocyanin, and beta-carotene - contribute to the normal function of the immune system. Many studies show that white blood cells (T lymphocytes, macrophages, B cells, killer cells) have their activity supported by regular spirulina intake. It also has the ability to contribute to maintaining a normal lipid metabolism.

Other studies published in specialised journals show that it supports haemoglobin levels, the red-blood-cell protein that carries oxygen through the blood and returns CO2 to the lungs. Combined with its immune-supporting properties, spirulina is a genuine support for the body's vitality - as part of a varied and balanced diet.

    🟢 What recent studies show

In concrete terms, the clinical data has grown over the past few years. A 2023 meta-analysis of 20 randomised controlled trials and 1,076 participants observed, in people supplemented with spirulina, a decrease in LDL cholesterol, total cholesterol and triglycerides, along with an increase in HDL cholesterol (Hamedifard et al., 2023, GRADE meta-analysis). Other work has studied its effect on markers of inflammation, such as C-reactive protein (dose-response meta-analysis) and on oxidative stress (review of randomised controlled trials, 2025). These results still need confirmation and do not replace medical follow-up, but they reinforce the interest of spirulina as part of a varied and balanced diet.

🟢 Weight, blood sugar and natural elimination functions

Organic spirulina can contribute to a normal lipid metabolism and supports healthy digestion. Its richness in chlorophyll makes it an excellent support for the body's natural elimination functions - particularly the liver - and it contributes to the balance of the gut flora. Research also suggests it can usefully fit into a diet aimed at maintaining normal blood sugar (as part of a varied and balanced diet, alongside medical follow-up for those concerned).

    🟢 Beauty & cosmetics

Its content of vitamin E, zinc and selenium helps it contribute to protecting cells against oxidative stress, with visible effects on a radiant complexion and normal skin regeneration, as well as on the health of hair and nails. It supports the hair thanks to its essential fatty acids and beta-carotene, in addition to all the minerals and vitamins it provides.

To make the most of its benefits, you can use it both in your diet and in your external care routine.

    🟢 Spirulina and pregnancy

Organic spirulina can be consumed by pregnant women - it is a valuable support for the body during this period, which calls for increased intakes of iron and protein.

    > Read our guide to superfoods during pregnancy.
Always seek the advice of a health professional before starting a course, particularly during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

    🟢 Precautions and contraindications

Spirulina is generally very well tolerated. A few precautions should nonetheless be known:

    - Autoimmune diseases (multiple sclerosis, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis): as spirulina supports immune activity, consult your doctor before any use in these cases.
    - Phenylketonuria: spirulina contains phenylalanine — it is contraindicated in this case.
    - Anticoagulant treatment: due to its vitamin K content, inform your doctor if you are on anticoagulants.
    - Quality is essential: uncertified spirulina may contain cyanotoxins or heavy metals. Always choose a certified organic spirulina tested for microcystins like Biovie's.
    - For full information on potential risks, see the assessment published by ANSES (the French food safety agency).

    > A note on B12: spirulina is a source of vitamin B12, however studies disagree on how well the body absorbs it. For people on a vegan diet, we recommend turning to specific food supplements.
