🥭 Harvested at physiological maturity by our partner Iulian, based on the Spanish Costa Tropical.
To withstand transport, the fruit is delivered still firm and will be ready to eat a few days after receipt. Once ripe, you can keep them for up to 15 days in the fridge.
We have tested different mango varieties and they are all so delicious that we decided to set up the logistics to be able to offer them to you on pre-order. Osteens are low in fibre, juicy and sweet.
How do you know when an Osteen is ready?
Whatever you do, do not go by colour. It is the classic mistake. The Osteen keeps a green to pale yellow skin, often covered with a lovely red-purple blush - and that blush is there well before the fruit is ripe. Honestly, the only reliable indicator is touch: press gently near the stalk, the flesh should give slightly under your thumb, without being soft. The scent also tells you. A ripe Osteen fills the room with its fragrance.
In concrete terms: leave your mangoes at room temperature, in the open air, without piling them up. Allow a few days to a week depending on the temperature of your kitchen. To speed things up, the old trick of a paper bag with an apple or a banana still works very well. And as soon as a mango is ready, into the fridge it goes - that is what lets you spread a 5 kg box over a good three weeks without losing anything.
In the kitchen. The Osteen has a thin, flat stone, which changes everything when cutting: you get two lovely thick cheeks. Low-fibre flesh, deep orange, very juicy, with that little touch of acidity behind the sweetness that stops it being cloying. To enjoy as is, in slices, with nothing else, or diced in a pea shoot salad with a drizzle of olive oil and a few sprouted seeds for example - the sweet-vegetable contrast works really well.
It also works very well in a smoothie, as an instant sorbet (frozen dice + blender, nothing else), or in a raw chutney. Less suited to prolonged cooking: it would be a shame to waste its fragrance.
A word on the season. The Osteen is the queen variety of Andalusia - it is more or less the only area in the world that produces it on this scale. It is harvested from September to November, a little earlier than the Keitt. Variable sizes, generally between 300 and 700 g per fruit. So you will have between 8 and 15 mangoes or so in your 5 kg box depending on the harvest.
🥭 To go further, here is what we suggest you read or taste alongside:
- Mango, avocado and pea shoot salad - Aurélie's raw recipe, ready in 10 minutes.
- The complete list of tropical fruits, from the rarest to the best known.
- The other boxes from the same supply chain: organic papayas, organic cherimoyas and organic Reed avocados.
🥭 What mango really contains:
1) High in vitamin C
This is mango's number one asset, and this one is solid: 36 mg of vitamin C per 100 g, i.e. 46% of the reference intake. An Osteen mango with 300 g of flesh therefore gives you around 110 mg of vitamin C. Vitamin C contributes to the normal function of the immune system, to the protection of cells from oxidative stress, and to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue.
2) Source of folate (vitamin B9)
Far less well known, and yet. With 43 µg per 100 g, i.e. 21% of the reference intake, mango is a source of folate - a vitamin that plant-based diets generally cover well, but which is rarely in excess. Folate contributes to normal psychological function and to normal blood formation, and has a role in the process of cell division. It also contributes to maternal tissue growth during pregnancy.
3) Carotenoids, including lutein and zeaxanthin
The deep orange colour of the Osteen's flesh tells you so: beta-carotene, lutein, zeaxanthin. Let us be honest: to date, no health claim is authorised in Europe for lutein and zeaxanthin. What we can say is that mango contains them, and that it is one more good reason to eat it.
4) Vitamin C increases iron absorption
You read everywhere that mango supposedly contains a lot of iron. In reality, that is false: it contains very little. But - and this is far more interesting - its vitamin C increases iron absorption non-haem iron, the kind found in plants. In concrete terms: diced mango on a lentil or sprouted seed salad, and the mango's vitamin C increases the absorption of iron from that meal. It is a simple habit, and particularly useful when you eat little or no animal products.
5) Vitamin C, collagen and skin
Vitamin C contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of skin, blood vessels, bones and cartilage. So much for what is established. On the other hand, mango does not "rejuvenate" the skin and does not replace sun protection - do not listen to what is said on that subject.
6) Fibre and water
1.6 g of fibre per 100 g, around 83% water, 60 kcal. A nice 400 g Osteen is therefore roughly 6 g of fibre and the equivalent of a large glass of water. Honestly, as a 4 o'clock snack, it is a very good choice.
A varied and balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle are important. The beneficial effects mentioned above are obtained with a consumption of around 200 to 300 g of mango, as part of a balanced diet.
Direct supply chain from Andalusia
We could not be more direct from this producer in Granada, Spain! Iulian Pescara took over the family business in 2018. 2 generations have followed one another in organically farming the various fields of avocados, papayas, cherimoyas and other local, seasonal exotic fruits, all of excellent quality and brought to perfection by the sun of southern Spain.
The Osteen was selected in Florida in the 1930s, but it is Andalusia that has made it its emblematic variety - the coasts of Granada and Malaga today account for most of world production. The subtropical microclimate of the Costa Tropical, wedged between the Sierra Nevada and the Mediterranean, clearly suits it very well.
The mangoes come in a 5-kilo pack.
Shipping is direct from Malaga, from the producer, by GLS. Once your parcel has been dispatched, delivery to your home takes 2/3 working days (non-contractual). You will receive an email from the carrier GLS informing you that your parcel has been sent, with a tracking link.
If you order other products from our shop, you will also have to pay the standard delivery charges for your other products: one parcel will leave from Marseille and another from Malaga. Arrives in 2 separate parcels.
No pick-up points. No delivery to Switzerland.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between an Osteen mango and a Keitt?
The Osteen is harvested earlier (September to November versus October to December for the Keitt), it is a little smaller (300 to 700 g versus 450 g to 1 kg), and its skin takes on a red-purple blush where the Keitt stays decidedly green. In terms of taste, the Osteen is a little sweeter and more fragrant, with a touch of acidity on the finish. Both are low in fibre. If you are hesitating, our organic 2-variety mango mix lets you compare in a single box.
How do I know if my Osteen mango is ripe?
By touch and smell, never by colour. Press gently near the stalk: the flesh should give slightly under your thumb, without being soft. A ripe Osteen also gives off a clear, sweet scent. The red-purple blush on the skin, on the other hand, appears well before ripeness - it is the classic trap with this variety.
My mangoes arrive hard, is that normal?
Yes, it is even intentional. The fruits are picked at physiological maturity and shipped firm to withstand the 2 to 3 days of transport from Malaga without damage. They finish ripening at your home, at room temperature, in a few days to a week.
How do you speed up ripening?
A kraft paper bag with an apple or a banana inside: these fruits give off ethylene, which triggers ripening. Count on saving 24 to 48 hours. Conversely, if you want to slow things down, space the fruits out in a cool, airy place - and definitely not in the fridge while they are still hard, as the cold blocks the process.
How many mangoes in a 5 kg box?
Between 8 and 15 fruits or so, depending on the sizes in the harvest. Osteens generally weigh between 300 and 700 g each. We do not sort by size: the box leaves just as it comes out of the orchard.
How long do they keep?
Once ripe, up to 15 days in the fridge. The right habit with a 5 kg box: leave everything at room temperature, and move each fruit to the fridge as soon as it is ready. That way you spread consumption over a good three weeks without losing anything.
Can you freeze Osteen mango?
Yes, and it is even the best way to deal with a surplus. Cut the flesh into dice, spread them on a tray, freeze, then transfer to a bag. The frozen dice put through a blender give you an instant sorbet with nothing added. The thawed texture, on the other hand, is softer: keep it for smoothies and purées rather than for eating in slices.
When is the season for Osteen mangoes from Spain?
From September to November, with a peak in October. Out of season, you can fall back on our freeze-dried mangoes, which keep most of the flavour.
