🌺 Pitayas, also known as dragon fruits, originate from Central America. Visually, the pitaya is a true little tropical gem, often gracing buffets as it resembles a flower, with its pink skin dotted with fine green scales, revealing red flesh speckled with small black seeds. Its unique and vibrant appearance adds a touch of color and elegance to any plate. In terms of taste, this delicate fruit offers a mild flavor, not very pronounced compared to other tropical fruits, and slightly sweet, reminiscent of a subtle blend between kiwi and pear. The fruit trees we offer grow on the lands of Andalusia, under the sun, with exceptional expertise for sustainable and responsible cultivation. We want you to taste this organic quality, directly from the producer !

Harvested at physiological maturity by our partner Iulian, located on the Spanish Tropical Coast.
To withstand transport, the fruits are delivered still firm and will be ready to eat a few days after receipt. Once ripe, you can store them in the fridge for up to 15 days. To go further, here are our storage tips to enjoy your fruits and vegetables for longer
.

How to enjoy it ? Nothing could be simpler: cut the fruit in half lengthwise, then enjoy the flesh with a spoon, much like a kiwi. You can also cut it into cubes to add to a fruit salad or a smoothie bowl. Only the skin is not edible.

Dragon fruit is a nutritional gem. It is very rich in numerous nutrients, but we often consume only a small amount per day, which brings its extraordinary levels back to normal in our daily diet.

🌺 Its virtues:

Pitayas contain betalains, which are natural pigments primarily found in red and purple fruits and vegetables. They are rare and possess powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that help reduce oxidative stress and inflammation. These properties are documented by several scientific studies, including a study on the betalain profile of red and white pitaya and their antioxidant activity.source: PubMed) and a study on the phytochemical and antioxidant profile of pitaya (source: PubMed).

On the other hand, the pitaya:
- Strengthens the immune system: thanks to its high vitamin C content.
- Improves digestion: the dietary fibers present help regulate intestinal transit.
- Promotes healthy skin: antioxidants and vitamins contribute to skin health.
- Regulates blood sugar levels: pitaya has a low glycemic index, making it a suitable fruit for people who monitor their blood sugar levels.

To know : In some people, consuming red-fleshed dragon fruit can temporarily color urine or stools pink-red. This phenomenon is harmless and not serious, related to the betalains naturally present in the fruit, and it disappears spontaneously within a few hours.

A varied and balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle are important. The properties mentioned above should be understood within this context, and not as an isolated effect of the fruit.

The simplest way is to cut the fruit in half and enjoy the flesh with a spoon, like a kiwi. You can also cut it into cubes for a fruit salad or a smoothie bowl. The skin is not edible.

Why is dragon fruit so expensive ?

The price is explained by a low crop yield, manual harvesting at maturity, and the need for rapid transport because the fruit is fragile. At Biovie, shipping is done directly from the producer in Spain, which limits intermediaries while ensuring freshness.

What is the season for dragon fruit in Spain ?

The pitaya grown in Andalusia is a seasonal fruit, available during a limited window of the year. Availability is indicated directly on the product page according to the current harvest from our producer Iulian.

Does dragon fruit have any side effects ?

Red-fleshed dragon fruit can temporarily color urine or stools pink, a benign effect related to the natural pigments (betalains) it contains, which disappears without treatment. Aside from this phenomenon, it is well tolerated by the majority of people.

Is dragon fruit good for your health ?

Pitaya is rich in vitamin C, fiber, and betalains, pigments with antioxidant properties studied for their role in reducing oxidative stress. Its low glycemic index also makes it a suitable fruit for people who monitor their blood sugar levels.
