Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups ready-made chia pudding (coconut-milk based, for instance)
  • 1 frozen banana, cut into pieces beforehand
  • Optional: a handful of dried blueberries or any other addition already to hand
  • Optional: a little granola for the top

Preparation

  1. Pour the chia pudding and the frozen banana into the blender.
  2. Add the dried blueberries or any other ingredient of your choice.
  3. Blend for a few seconds until smooth.
  4. Pour into a jar, scatter over some granola if you like, and take it with you.

Tip

Make your chia pudding the night before in a large batch: you will then always have a base ready for this express smoothie on rushed mornings.

FAQ: your questions about chia pudding smoothies

Why should you not eat more than 15 g of chia seeds a day?

That figure corresponds to the daily portion the European Food Safety Authority considered in its assessment of chia as a novel food, not to a toxicity threshold. In practice, the limit is mainly digestive: 15 g already provide about 5 g of fibre, and doubling the dose all at once often causes bloating and discomfort in anyone not used to it. This recipe, with a cup and a half of pudding, stays comfortably within that order of magnitude. As always with fibre, the rule is to increase gradually and to drink enough.

How do you add protein to a smoothie?

There are several routes, depending on what you have to hand. Nut butters - almond, sunflower, hazelnut - are the simplest: one tablespoon brings protein and good fats, and markedly improves the mouthfeel. Seeds also work very well: hulled hemp, chia, ground flax, pumpkin. On the liquid side, a soya drink is far higher in protein than an almond milk. Finally, plant protein powders do the job, provided you check their ingredient list - many are loaded with flavourings and sweeteners.

Which protein powder is ideal for a smoothie?

For a fruit smoothie like this one, a neutral or vanilla powder blends better than a chocolate or coffee flavour that would overwhelm the banana. Among plant sources, pea protein is the most common and the most complete in essential amino acids, rice protein is milder in taste but lower in lysine, and hemp brings fibre and omega-3 into the bargain. The real deciding criterion remains the ingredient list: a good powder has two or three items, not fifteen.
