The term lucerne, for its part, refers to its use as fodder for animals. Both names refer to the same extraordinary plant.

• Anticoagulant treatments : alfalfa contains vitamin K and may interact with certain anticoagulants (warfarin type). If you are on medical treatment, consult your doctor.
• Pregnancy and breastfeeding : moderate consumption, well rinsed, is generally reasonable. If in doubt, ask your healthcare professional's advice.
• History of hormone-dependent cancers : the phytoestrogen (coumestrol) content warrants prior medical advice.
• Sprouting hygiene : rinse the seeds well in cold water twice a day throughout germination. Essential to avoid any unwanted bacterial growth. See the ANSES recommendations on sprouted seeds.
