Regular maintenance of your Ecofiltro is essential for it to continue providing clean and fresh water.
Follow the steps below to maintain your Ecofiltro using the specially designed maintenance kit:
1. Cleaning the filtration unit
- gently scrub the filtering unit with the loofah sponge, focusing on removing any residue or buildup.
- thoroughly rinse the filtering unit with potable water.
2. Cleaning the container and lid
- apply the coconut cleaning soap.
- using the bamboo cleaning brush, spread the coconut soap over the container and lid.
- gently scrub the surfaces in a circular motion to remove stains and residues.
- rinse thoroughly with potable water to remove all soap.
3. Drying and reassembly
- allow all components to air dry completely.
- reassemble the Ecofiltro once all parts are dry and ready for use.
For optimal performance, repeat this maintenance routine every 3 to 6 months, depending on your usage and water hardness. Regular maintenance will help extend the life of your Ecofiltro and maintain the quality of your filtered water.
Note: special care should be taken when cleaning the clay filter, using only the loofah fiber sponge with the utmost caution. Scrubbing the filter with the bamboo handle brush and sisal bristles could be too abrasive and damage the filter by removing the thin layer of clay covering the activated charcoal inside, leaving it exposed.

ECOFILTRO
The adventure begins with Dr. Fernando Mazariegos in Guatemala in the 1990s. He was tasked by the IDB (Inter-American Development Bank) to find a simple, sustainable, and economical way to purify water for the populations of Latin America who do not have access to this vital resource.
He closely observed indigenous populations and made it a point to use local resources and technologies. After numerous trials in his research center, he developed the Ecofiltro filter: "we did not invent filtration, but we worked on technological development applied to the use of materials and substances that enhance the process".
The EcoFiltro was chosen by Corentin de Chatelperron and Caroline Pultz, with whom we are currently collaborating. Caroline and Corentin are the creators of the Desert Biosphere and highlighted by the Low Tech Lab in this video:
Due to its simplicity and low cost, it quickly gained popularity; however, the project, funded solely by donations, could not develop. That's why, in 2000, Ecofiltro became a socially responsible non-profit organization that contributes to improving living and health conditions while combating environmental pollution from plastic.
A few years later, in 2009, the organization transformed into a socially responsible company and expanded its production to other regions of the world. The profits generated in wealthier countries allow access to purified water in regions that cannot afford it.
Between 2014 and 2022, this operation allowed the distribution of 33,751 Ecofiltros to 6,210 schools.
In 2020, the company obtained BCorp certification, a recognition of all their efforts to combat the consequences of climate change and their unwavering social and environmental commitment.
*BCorp is one of the most important labels certifying companies that aim for a benefit for all, social, environmental, and economic, with full transparency to the public.
Today, Ecofiltro is present worldwide and continues its fight for ecological, economical, plastic-free access to 100% pure filtered water.

- a coconut-based cleaning soap, 7.5cm x 6.5cm, made from 100% natural coconut and perfect for cleaning the container and lid.
- a bamboo cleaning brush, dimensions 7.8cm x 5.5cm, featuring a durable bamboo handle and sisal bristles, ideal for scrubbing the container and lid.
