Ecofiltro 5L Mustard Yellow — Low-tech clay water filter

Discovered at a rural market in South America, the Ecofiltro is a low-tech water filter made from natural clay which purifies water without electricity, without plastic, and without chemical consumables. Its system, composed of clay, activated charcoal, and colloidal silver, eliminates 100% of microplastics and more than 99% of PFAS — certified by independent tests (Measurlabs, December 2024 and June 2025). Created in Guatemala for populations without access to drinking water, it is now produced by a BCorp certified company and distributed by Biovie in France.

How does the Ecofiltro work ?

The Ecofiltro is a filtration system Low-tech which uses natural materials with proven effectiveness. It consists of several layers:

schéma explicatif de la composition du filtre écofiltrotableau efficacité filtration Ecofiltro microplastiques PFAS bactéries 2024

    - Clay: It creates microscopic passages that allow water molecules to pass through but not the main contaminants, bacteria, or parasites. The pores have a maximum size of 0.8 micrometers. And of course, it does not let solid particles pass through.
    - Activated charcoal: Obtained through a process of heating sawdust, activated charcoal improves water by removing unpleasant odors, taste, and turbidity.
    - Colloidal silver : a layer of silver is applied after baking, serving as a secondary protective filter that allows the removal of remaining contaminants. This widely used bactericide around the world purifies water without any adverse effects.

The metal container protects the filter from impacts.

As it passes through this natural composite material, the water is cleansed of contaminants while preserving its mineral composition, resulting in water that is even purer than bottled mineral waters, with a satisfactory taste quality.

What is the efficiency of the filtration ?

Ecofiltro guarantees strict filtration of the main contaminants: parasites, bacteria, pesticides, soaps, and microplastics (diameter between 5 millimeters and 1 micrometer).

The clay filter is regularly subjected to laboratory tests to ensure its effectiveness over time and to guarantee compliance with strict filtration and purification standards. Ecofiltro was initially created for populations without access to drinking water — the safety of individuals and potability are therefore absolute priorities, scientifically validated.

In more detail, each natural component has its use:

    Clay captures:
    - solids
    - bacteria
    - the parasites
    - microplastics

    Colloidal silver eliminates:
    - bacteria
    - the parasites
    - mushrooms
    - the toxins
    - the viruses

    The activated charcoal destroyed:
    - bad odors
    - the taste
    - the color and the suspended particles

contaminants éliminés par le filtre ecofiltro

Independently tested by Measurlabs, , Ecofiltro eliminates 100% of polystyrene microplastics and does not itself release microplastics, thus ensuring clean and plastic-free drinking water.

The laboratory results (from December 2024) confirm thatEcofiltro eliminates more than 99% of PFAS and pharmaceutical residues., which allows you to obtain clean and purified water for your home.

Tests from June 2025 also confirm that Ecofiltro eliminates more than 99% of bacteria such as the bacterium E.coli for example.

Ecofiltro does not eliminate lime, but it significantly reduces its amount. It is important to note that lime is a bactericide that helps limit the proliferation of microorganisms — therefore, it is essential to always have a small amount in purified water.

    Is the Ecofiltro safe ?

The Ecofiltro is frequently questioned about its safety, particularly regarding colloidal silver and the materials used. Here are the responses based on available independent tests.

✔️ No release of microplastics : The Measurlabs tests (December 2024) confirm that the clay filter does not itself release microplastics into the filtered water.

✔️ Colloidal silver within regulatory limits : the initial release is about 40 ppb, well below the recommended daily intake limit. According to the USEPA (United States Environmental Protection Agency), the maximum intake should not exceed 350 µg/day for a 70 kg adult.

✔️ Suitable for infants : tap water (basic drinking water) filtered by Ecofiltro is suitable for feeding and hydrating infants.

⚠️ Important contraindications : do not use to filter saltwater, hot water, or rain/well water without prior laboratory analysis.

    An overview of colloidal silver

Colloidal silver is a natural antimicrobial that does not cause side effects or allergies.
On each clay filter, 0.22 liters of colloidal silver at 530 ppm is applied for the 5L, and 0.42 liters for the 20L, both internally and externally. Studies show that initially, there is a greater release of silver, around 40 ppb (0.04 ppm), which is well below the recommended daily intake limit of about 30 ppm. According to the USEPA (United States Environmental Protection Agency), the maximum silver intake should not exceed 5 µg per kilogram of body weight per day, which corresponds to a daily intake of 350 µg for an average adult weighing 70 kilograms.

Assembling and starting up the filtration unit, there's nothing easier !

    1) Insert the filter into the container by holding it firmly by the edges (not underneath) to avoid breaking it.
    2) Fill the filter to the top to moisten all the walls. Do not let the filter dry after the first use.
    3) Close the lid and wait a few hours for the water to flow, then enjoy pure water from the tap! Under normal operation, it produces 2 liters of purified water per hour.
    4) Position the filter on the edge of a flat surface so that the tap is easily accessible. If necessary, you can place it on a Ecofiltro wooden lift support available in our store.

Feel free to watch this tutorial video to learn how to install the filter:

During the initial uses, the speed will be slower (the maximum speed may take up to 3 weeks to appear). : It's normal, the pores of the clay open slowly and the water may taste like clay. We recommend discarding the very first filtrations and tasting the water until it has a taste that suits you.

    Regular filter maintenance

Once in operation, you must clean the filter and its metal container. at least every 6 months.

    1) Completely drain the water from the filter.
    2) Remove the clay filter by holding it firmly by the edges. Place it on a clean cloth.
    3) With clean hands, carefully wash the filter using a sponge dedicated solely for this purpose. Do not use soap or detergent, only pure water. Clean the inside and outside by rinsing the sponge regularly.
    4) Let it dry on a clean cloth. Cover it with another cloth to prevent dust or insects from contaminating it.
    5) Clean the metal container, the lid, and the tap using a brush and soap.

↪️ Ecofiltro: An Ecological Solution for Pure Water at Home

Update: March 2026. Article approved by Éric Viard, founder of Biovie and engineer ISTOM, co-author of " Seaweed in everyday life "(Gallimard, 2024) — Best cookbook in the world, Gourmand Cookbook Awards 2025, and Best cookbook in France, National Academy of Cuisine 2025.

    The history of Ecofiltro

The adventure begins with Dr. Fernando Mazariegos in Guatemala in the 1990s. He is tasked by the IDB (Inter-American Development Bank) to find a simple, sustainable, and economical way to purify water for the populations in Latin America who do not have access to this vital resource.

He observes indigenous populations a lot and makes it a point to use local resources and technologies. After numerous trials in his research center, he developed the Ecofiltro filter: "we did not invent filtration, but we worked on technological development applied to the use of materials and substances that enhance the process."

The EcoFiltro was chosen by Corentin de Chatelperron and Caroline Pultz, with whom we are currently collaborating. Caroline and Corentin are the creators of the Desert Biosphere and are featured by the Low Tech Lab in this video:

Due to its simplicity and low cost, it quickly gains popularity. In 2000, Ecofiltro becomes a socially responsible non-profit organization. In 2009, the organization transforms into a socially responsible company and expands its production to other regions of the world. The profits generated in wealthier countries allow access to purified water in regions that cannot afford it.
Between 2014 and 2022, this operation allowed for the distribution of 33,751 Ecofiltros to 6,210 schools.

In 2020, the company obtains the BCorp certification, a recognition of all their efforts to combat the consequences of climate change and their unwavering social and environmental commitment.
*BCorp is one of the most important labels that certify companies aiming for a benefit for all, socially, environmentally, and economically, with full transparency towards the public.

Today, Ecofiltro is present worldwide and continues its fight for an eco-conscious lifestyle, providing ecological, economical, plastic-free access to 100% pure filtered water.

In France, the Ecofiltro is available at Biovie., a partner who also offers you the replacement filter, the maintenance kit, and the wooden stand — with direct shipping from the manufacturer's warehouse via FedEx to preserve the integrity of the clay filter.

Frequently Asked Questions about the Ecofiltro 5L

How does the Ecofiltro work ?

The Ecofiltro is a low-tech water filter composed of three natural layers: clay (which retains solids, bacteria, parasites, and microplastics through 0.8 µm pores), activated charcoal (which removes odors, taste, and turbidity), and colloidal silver (a natural bactericide). Water passes through this composite by gravity, without electricity, and comes out purified while retaining its essential minerals.

Is the water filtered by the Ecofiltro drinkable ?

Yes. The Ecofiltro is designed to filter tap water, which is already drinkable. The filtered water is suitable for feeding and hydrating infants. Independent tests by Measurlabs (2024-2025) confirm the elimination of more than 99% of bacteria.E.coli), 100% of microplastics and more than 99% of PFAS.

Ecofiltro or Berkey — which one to choose ?

The Ecofiltro is a low-tech filter made from natural clay, without plastic parts, recyclable at the end of its life (flower pot, fertilizer), and BCorp certified. It filters 100% of microplastics and more than 99% of PFAS in its 5L version. The Berkey filter, on the other hand, uses carbon elements. The choice depends on your daily water volume (the Ecofiltro is also available in 20L), your ecological priorities, and the design you want for your interior. To learn more about filtration systems, check out our article on the Filtered carafes and reverse osmosis systems.

How long does the Ecofiltro last and how can it be recycled ?

The lifespan of the clay filter is 2 years. A replacement filter is available separately. At the end of its life, the filter can be used as a flower pot, for plant drainage, or broken into small pieces and mixed with soil as a natural fertilizer — a 100% circular approach.
