Ecofiltro 5 L mustard yellow, a warm shade for the kitchen

Mustard yellow appeals to those who love warm interiors: raw wood, terracotta floor tiles, earthenware, linen tea towels. It is a bold colour but not a garish one, reminiscent of the enamelled objects of yesteryear. It also has its place in a more modern kitchen, as a counterpoint to a grey wall or a dark worktop.

The shade changes nothing in the way the filter works. This yellow model takes the same clay element, offers the same 5 litres and filters at the same rate as its black, white, pink, mint green or light blue counterparts. Only the enamel of the container changes.

Key points to remember

• 5 L capacity: 1.5 L in the upper filter, 3.5 L in the lower part. Designed for one or two people.
• A flow rate that settles in: a few glasses per hour at first, up to 2 L per hour after about three weeks.
• A filter element to renew every 2 years, available on its own.

The first three weeks: what to expect

This is the question that comes up most often after delivery, so we might as well deal with it here. On the first filling, the water takes several hours to pass through: the clay is still closed. For a few days, you will get one or two glasses per hour, sometimes with an earthy taste. Pour away these first batches and taste regularly until you can no longer detect this taste.

Then the pores gradually open and the flow rate increases to around 2 L per hour. This break-in period can last three weeks. The key point during this time: never let the clay dry out, always keep water in the upper part.

A colour that pairs with wood

Mustard yellow goes particularly well with the Ecofiltro wooden raising stand we offer: the filter gains height, the tap becomes easier to reach and the whole thing takes on the look of a handcrafted object. At 30 cm high and 22 cm in diameter, it remains compact. Empty, it weighs about 1 kg; once full, it will obviously be heavier, so choose its spot before filling it.

How the water is filtered

You pour tap water in at the top, and gravity does the rest. It passes through a wall of fired clay with pores of 0.8 micrometres at most, which stops particles, bacteria and parasites. The activated carbon, obtained by heating sawdust, acts on odours, flavour and turbidity. The colloidal silver, applied after firing, acts as a second barrier. For the 5 L, the dose applied is 0.22 litres at 530 ppm. Limescale decreases markedly but does not disappear.

Six-monthly maintenance

Empty the filter, take out the clay holding it by the edges and place it on a clean cloth. Wash it with a sponge used only for this, in pure water, without soap or detergent. Leave it to dry under a second cloth. The yellow container, the lid and the tap are cleaned with a brush and soap.

Where does the Ecofiltro come from?

Its story begins in Guatemala in the 1990s. Dr Fernando Mazariegos was then given a specific mission by the Inter-American Development Bank: to find a simple, sustainable and low-cost way of making water drinkable for populations in Latin America who had no access to it. He observed indigenous know-how and drew on local resources. Fired clay, charcoal and silver are the result of this work. The yellow filter you receive today is still based on this same principle.

The filter travels directly from the manufacturer's warehouse, which avoids extra handling.
