Sliced Tiger Nut from Organic Farming
Sliced tiger nut is the tuber of the Cyperus esculentus plant, cut into thin slices for direct consumption. Naturally sweet taste reminiscent of hazelnut, crunchy and fleshy texture. Specifically, its sliced format allows it to be integrated everywhere in cooking, without soaking or prior preparation - you can munch it as is, sprinkle it, or incorporate it.
It perfectly replaces nuts and cereals in your pastries, mueslis, or tart bases. It makes an excellent raw tart base (half date, half sliced tiger nut). You can sprinkle it on your morning porridge - a delicious alternative to oats. And for the final touch: a spoonful in your soups and broths brings unexpected sweetness and roundness.
🌾 This ancient tuber, also known as "tiger nut," has been appreciated for centuries for its taste and culinary qualities. It is the fruit of the perennial rhizomatous herbaceous plant called "Chufa" (Cyperus esculentus). It was already loved in Ancient Egypt! Highly appreciated in sub-Saharan Africa and Spain - where it gives the famous "horchata de chufa" -, its inimitable naturally sweet taste and crunchy, fleshy texture are reminiscent of hazelnut or almond.
Naturally gluten-free and peanut-free, it is an interesting solution for people with allergies or intolerances.
It is sourced from fair trade in Niger in partnership with Tigernuts.
🌾 Our Gourmet Ideas with Sliced Tiger Nut
With Aurélie, we mainly use it in the morning - that's when it's most versatile. Here are the preparations that are most common at home, all without cooking:
- Morning Muesli - a handful of sliced tiger nut mixed with dried fruits, seeds, and some nuts. Guaranteed crunch, and no added sugar needed.
- Raw Overnight Porridge - let the tiger nut soak overnight with chia seeds and a plant-based milk. In the morning, everything is ready.
- Raw Tart Base - half dates, half sliced tiger nut, mixed and pressed into the mold. It's my favorite base for a fruit tart without an oven.
- Energy Balls - dates and tiger nut mixed, rolled in coconut. Perfect for hiking or the 4 PM slump.
- Cocoa Porridge - tiger nut rehydrated in warm plant-based milk with raw cocoa paste. Comforting, truly.
- The Touch on Soups - a spoonful of sliced tiger nut sprinkled on a soup or puree just before serving, for sweetness and crunch.

🌾 Its Composition:
- Tiger nut offers a delicious alternative for gluten-free diets, cereal-free, or for people allergic to nuts. Frankly, it's one of the few ingredients that ticks all these boxes at once - with a real natural sweet taste as a bonus.
- It's a better source of omega-9 than olive oil. It also provides vitamins C and E as well as natural antioxidants - to the point that the cosmetic industry has been interested in it for a long time.
- Tiger nut is richer in potassium than bananas, by weight. Its 845 mg per 100 g make it a great natural source of this mineral, as part of a varied and balanced diet.
- Rich in fiber (15 g per 100 g) - much more than oats, carrots, or dates. A nutritional profile rarely found in a tuber.
- Ancient origin: tiger nut was already consumed in Ancient Egypt. Today, it remains a daily food in sub-Saharan Africa and Spain, where the tradition has never been interrupted.

Frequently Asked Questions about Sliced Tiger Nut
Do you need to soak sliced tiger nut before consuming it?
No, that's the advantage of the sliced format: it can be eaten directly, without soaking or preparation. You can eat it as is, sprinkle it on porridge, or incorporate it into a raw dough. Soaking is only useful if you want a softer texture, for example, for an overnight porridge or tiger nut milk.
Does tiger nut contain gluten or peanuts?
No. Tiger nut is a tuber, naturally gluten-free and peanut-free. Despite its nickname "tiger nut," it is not a nut: it is suitable for people allergic or intolerant to gluten as well as nuts. Our reference is composed of 100% tiger nut, with no other ingredients.
What is the difference between sliced tiger nut and tiger nut flakes?
They are the same tuber, cut differently. Sliced tiger nut comes in thin crunchy slices, ideal for munching as is or sprinkling. The flakes, finer, are more suitable for porridges, plant-based milks, and pastries. Both can be used interchangeably in most recipes.
How to store sliced tiger nut?
The vacuum-sealed package should be kept in a cool, dry place. Once opened, reseal it well or transfer the tiger nut to an airtight jar, and consume preferably within 9 months. Thanks to its low water content, it keeps very well at room temperature, without the need for refrigeration.
How to use sliced tiger nut in cooking?
It replaces nuts and cereals in mueslis, porridges, raw tart bases (half dates, half tiger nut), and energy balls. You can also sprinkle it on a soup or puree just before serving to add sweetness and crunch. Its naturally sweet taste, similar to hazelnut, works well for breakfast as well as dessert.
Where does Biovie's tiger nut come from?
From Niger, through fair trade, in exclusive partnership for France with Tigernuts Traders, which has been importing tiger nut for about twenty years. It is carefully cultivated and harvested, in a sustainable and ethically sourced approach beneficial to local communities.
Can you make plant-based milk with tiger nut?
Yes. It's even one of its most well-known uses: in Spain, tiger nut gives the famous "horchata de chufa." Simply soak it, then blend with water and strain. You can find the detailed method in our blog article "How to Make Tiger Nut Milk?".
