Vegetable broth with Irish Moss: the alternative to bone broth

Vegetable broth with Irish Moss: the alternative to bone broth

- Categories : Vegan recipes Rss feed

There has been a lot of talk about bone broth in recent years. An "ancestral remedy," said to heal the gut, remineralize, provide collagen, and comfort. But for me, it's not obvious. I've never wanted to simmer carcasses for hours. I looked for something else. Something that respects life, nourishes deeply, and aligns with my journey inliving foods. This is how this collagen-like vegetable broth was born, made from Irish Moss, a red algae known scientifically as Chondrus crispus, which we offer at the Biovie store. A recipe that ticks all the health boxes and, I assert, can dethrone animal bone broth.

recipe

My Collagen-Like Broth Recipe (1 L – 2/3 servings)

Ingredients

  • 1 heaping tablespoon (≈ 8 g) of Biovie Irish Moss powder (sea moss)

  • 1 L of filtered water (slightly warm, max 40–45 °C if raw)

  • 40 g of fresh wakame (or 10 g dried rehydrated)

  • 2 stalks of fresh celery (or 2 tablespoons of celery powder)
  • 1 tablespoon of tamari
  • 1 tablespoon of unpasteurized miso (added cold)

  • Juice of ½ fresh lemon
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons of nutritional yeast (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon of toasted sesame oil or olive oil

Preparation

  1. Blend the Irish Moss (sea moss) with 250 ml of water to obtain a smooth gel.
  2. Add the rest of the water, wakame, celery, ginger, turmeric, tahini, and spirulina. Blend for 1 to 2 minutes.
  3. Off the heat, incorporate the miso, lemon juice, yeast, and oil.
  4. Adjust with tamari or lemon.

Result: a warm, creamy, perfectly iodized drink with a deep and comforting taste.

Collagen-like broth

Animal Bone Broth vs. Irish Moss Broth

Bone broth fans might say: - "There's no collagen." - "It lacks protein." - "It doesn't have as many minerals as bones." - "It's not traditional." And yet... What I have observed with my plant-based broth:

  • Collagen-like: Irish Moss, this red algae from the Atlantic, provides polysaccharides that protect and repair the intestinal mucosa. With tahini, spirulina, and the vitamin C from lemon, the body has everything it needs to produce its own collagen.
  • Proteins: spirulina and tahini provide complete, digestible, and assimilable amino acids, thus supporting the proper functioning of the digestive system.
  • Minerals: wakame and Irish Moss are true marine concentrates of essential minerals like calcium, magnesium, iodine, and zinc. More bioavailable than minerals extracted from bones through prolonged cooking.
  • Tradition: yes, bones have been boiled for centuries.

But algae too! In Ireland, Brittany, Japan, they have nourished and healed generations.

Why choose the plant-based alternative?

Because this broth is:

  • Ethical: no need to exploit animals.
  • Alkalizing: it nourishes without clogging, whereas bones also release purines and acids.
  • Digestible: no heaviness, no excessive protein that's hard to manage.
  • Remineralizing: it replenishes with bioavailable minerals, essential for nervous and hormonal balance.
  • Repairing: the polysaccharides in Irish Moss form a gentle barrier for the mucous membranes.

And above all, because it embodies another vision of health: a connected, plant-based health that respects life.

My Feelings

With each cup of this broth, I feel a sense of calm. It's an inner warmth that nourishes without excess. No miracle promises, but real everyday support. It accompanies me in my moments of concentration, rest, or when I want comfort that doesn't weigh on my digestion. It's my way of saying: yes, you can take care of your body powerfully... without giving up your values.

FAQ – Irish Moss Vegetable Broth (SEO)

Does Irish Moss broth contain collagen?

No, it does not contain animal collagen. However, it provides precursors (amino acids, vitamin C, minerals) that allow the body to produce its own collagen.

Is Irish Moss rich in protein?

It contains about 10% protein when dry, but mainly essential amino acids. Combined with spirulina and tahini, the broth offers a truly complete protein intake.

What minerals are found in Irish Moss broth?

Calcium, magnesium, potassium, zinc, iodine... all highly bioavailable, as they come from the marine plant kingdom.

Can this broth be used every day?

Yes. It is digestible, alkalizing, and remineralizing. One cup a day, hot or warm, can become a daily ritual.

Does this broth really replace bone broth?

Yes, and it goes even further. It offers the same digestive and remineralizing benefits, without heaviness or acidic waste, and without any animal products.
