The jackfruit is the largest fruit in the world (from a fruit tree), its shell is covered with spikes, and it can weigh up to 40kg. It belongs to the same family as mulberries: the Moraceae. Its white to yellow flesh can be eaten like a fruit, either raw or cooked, while its large seeds can be roasted or boiled (like chestnuts). When still young, its flesh is also used as a meat substitute in savory dishes.
Still little known in France, it is starting to appear in vegetarian/vegan restaurants, mainly to mimic "pulled pork" or chicken breast.
Its quite unique taste is a mix of banana and mango.

The tree, the jackfruit tree, can grow up to 20 meters tall and produces fruit after 3 years. Its fruits grow directly on the trunk or on the largest branches of the tree. It secretes a sticky latex that was once used as an adhesive.
The fruits are certified "pesticide residue-free" simply because there is no need for them during cultivation.
