A young man full of life suddenly falters: he has just learned that he has multiple sclerosis. This dreadful disease will gradually cripple him, everything will unfold like in a horror movie, the enemy strikes anywhere, anytime. The guillotine is selective, he will never know which limb or vital function he will be deprived of tomorrow.

After a period of despair that brings him to the brink of nothingness, he decides to escape the gaze of others. He sells the little he owns to buy a small catamaran and live out his dreams in the Caribbean islands before it's too late. He will no longer endure pity, vague contempt, or cruel ignorance. He then puts himself in orbit of the world, sailing from island to island, while juggling crises.

Until the one that, several times a day and wherever he was, made him collapse into himself, paralyzed and unable to say a word, a helpless spectator of his long descent into hell. This time, he was afraid of losing his life in the great swell of the open sea. He was going to surrender, he knew it now, but before that, he had to find a deserted island and spend a few days there to etch this dream into his memory, in extremis. After that, yes, he would surrender.

Except that he discovers raw food and immediately embarks on the adventure. At first, he struggles to reconcile this way of eating raw with his role as a solo sailor. He flounders, in fact, so he tinkers, adapts, and invents, and he quickly discovers that by eating this way, the symptoms regress rapidly and the crises disappear. He then leads a wild life, feeding on fishing and foraging during his stopovers, savoring his new life.

Dominique Guyaux has drawn from this almost initiatory adventure a poignant and hopeful narrative.
With a disconcerting frankness of sincerity, he recounts the eruption of evil, his battles to survive, and his retreats into childhood, with his Father, when life is too hard, until some speak to him of resurrection.

The comic book edition, superbly illustrated by Joachim Rossignol who worked on the drawings by hand only, adds considerable depth to this poignant story.

DOMINIQUE GUYAUX

Dominique Guyaux was born in 1956 in Marseille and comes from a lineage of sailors. He studied biology but interrupted his oceanography degree to learn sailmaking in order to make a living while realizing his dream: to sail around the world. He started his own sailmaking business in 1981 but was confronted with multiple sclerosis in 1985. He sold everything he owned and set sail with a small catamaran towards the Caribbean.

During his journey, which will last three years, he discovers raw foodism and his life takes a turn. His recovery, as unpredictable as it is sudden, overwhelms him. He doubts, tests, and stumbles, and publishes his first book: "When I Am Alone with the Sea." But this recovery is not enough for him. He wants to understand: for several years, he frequents raw food circles, teaches the practice of this unconventional diet, and publishes his second book (The Pleasure Diet).

In 2006, he entered the École Pratique des Hautes Études (EPHE) and completed his diploma with a thesis on the raw and the cooked, which he validated in 2013. Through this work, an entire aspect of the history of human dietary behavior, which had previously remained in the shadows, is suddenly illuminated. In 2015, he published a public version of his work with Medicis: "In Praise of Raw," how to reconcile diet and health. Today, Dominique Guyaux gives lectures on the subject and teaches the practice of sensory raw foodism.

Two research projects are still close to his heart: establishing the first hospital unit for sensory dietetics with a therapeutic aim, and studying the gut microbiota of current sensory raw foodists. He also has a dream of making a film (with Luc Besson?) that tells the story of the diet of the human evolutionary lineage. Quite a story indeed, still largely unknown...
