Propolis is a natural substance collected by bees from the buds and bark of various types of trees (poplars, horse chestnuts, conifers). Its name comes from ancient Greek, where "pro" means "forward" and "polis" refers to the "city". This etymology perfectly reflects its role: serve as a protective barrier at the entrance of the hive and help keep it clean and healthy.
Inside the hive, it is used to sanitize, protect, and strengthen the colony's environment. The bees use it to insulate the entrance, sterilize the inside of the hive, and embalm impurities that cannot be removed, thus maintaining the interior of a healthy hive in a state of asepsis comparable to that of an operating room !
While pollen primarily meets the nutritional needs of the colony, propolis is essential for reinforcing the internal structure of the hive, sealing cracks, and protecting the entire hive against microorganisms. Thanks to its natural antimicrobial properties, it helps limit the growth of bacteria, fungi, and other unwanted agents.
Humans have been using propolis since ancient times, just like honey or pollen, for its therapeutic properties. In many medical traditions, it has been used as an antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, or even as a healing agent.
