Coffee alternative made from lupin beans (moving towards organic practices) ORIGINAL

Coffee is one of the most ingrained habits in French daily life, and at the same time, the most difficult to change. Whether you have to stop for health reasons or simply want to reduce your daily consumption, this little addiction is hard to lose, so unique is the sensory experience: the smell of hot coffee, that typical taste at the end of the meal, the power of the drink when you wake up... And until then, no alternative could combine all these parameters with a positive effect for health AND for the planet.

We had been looking for this alternative for a long time without much success, but we were amazed by Lupi.

☕ A not-so-new superfood

Lupi Coffee is the rediscovery of an ancient infusion made from lupin beans which has been part of the history of humanity for at least 4000 years! Mentions of this lupin infusion are present on the papyri of ancient Egypt. And closer to us, Italy or Germany are familiar with this alternative as being the one that tastes closest to coffee. It was time for it to come to France!

☕ A drink that has good intentions

Lupi Coffee is naturally caffeine and acid-free, produced according regenerative farming practices in Germany and is the closest drink to coffee you can taste. Unlike coffee, which has a strong ecological and societal impact (comes from afar, questionable working conditions, polluted soils, etc.), lupin is grown here and has an incredible ecological footprint.

In addition, it is the first alternative coffee that can be prepared like a classic coffee, whatever the method used (machine, Italian coffee maker, filter...). But beware: even if it is prepared like classic coffee, it physically behaves differently. So, we will have to relearn the art of preparing a good Lupi!

☕ Lupi, for whom is it?

People looking for a healthier, more sustainable lifestyle or just anyone who loves a good cup of coffee. It is even suitable for children, pregnant or breastfeeding women. Lupi is for all of you!

Naturally FREE of caffeine, irritants, gluten, soy and lactose, so it can be enjoyed by everyone without moderation.

Caution: As with soy and peanuts (cousins of lupin), a very small number of people are unable to process certain strains of proteins in lupin. Avoid if you have a legumes allergy.

The lupin beans are roasted = this product is NOT RAW (without roasting it is impossible to find the taste of coffee).

An alternative, which suits to all your desires

With 2 sugars or plain. With plant-based milk or without milk. Hot or cold. In a cup or in a pastry. It's up to you!

At Biovie we offer 2 varieties: Espresso and Original.

The benefits of Lupi Original:

    - Classic grind

    - Soft roasting

    - Delicate and very aromatic taste

Ideal for filter coffee makers and French press coffee makers.

If you use an espresso machine or an Italian coffee maker: consult the Lupi Expresso sheet.

☕ Short user guide

The grinding: first of all, the grinding is coarser and heavier than regular coffee. Thus, to prepare a Lupi, less grind must be used in terms of volume compared to a classic coffee.

It swells!

Lupi coffee swells much more than regular coffee, because lupin beans have a higher protein content than coffee beans. This especially has an impact on the preparation in an espresso machine and an Italian coffee maker. Using too much grind will prevent the water from flowing.

If you use an automatic coffee maker, you will absolutely have to readjust the settings (more water, less grind). Otherwise, you risk blocking the machine...

French press: pour 2-3 teaspoons per cup into the French press, add boiling water, wait 4 minutes. Stir and push the press. All you have to do is serve in the cups and it's ready!

Drip coffee maker: 2-3 teaspoons per cup depending on your taste.

Lupin has long been reserved for animal food. It is gradually returning to our plates, in particular thanks to its high plant-based protein content: almost 40%! This content makes it a very good competitor to soy. In addition it contains the 8 essential amino acids for a perfect protein.

Its glycemic index is low and it contains essential fatty acids.

The fiber content of lupin beans is also very high, which contributes to the proper regulation of your intestinal transit and helps feed your intestines with good bacteria.

Rich in E vitamin, it has an antioxidant effect. It contains a good amount of B2, B3, and B9 vitamins which are important for the regulation of the nervous system and for the regulation of our metabolism.

Rich in minerals: magnesium, calcium, zinc and iron.

Lupins are roasted at a lower temperature and for a longer period than coffee beans. This process is gentler and reduces the formation of residual materials and polymers produced during roasting. Thus coffee alternatives are much more easily tolerated by the stomach.

Traditional coffee is an acidic product. Naturally present in green coffee beans, the acidity is reinforced during roasting. It is also provided by caffeine: it encourages the body to produce more acid, which after a high dose of caffeine, can lead to such an amount that you have a stomach ache. It's not harmful but it's not pleasant!

Lupin coffee is naturally acid-free and caffeine-free: no more problems with acid reflux or stomach cramps.

Some benefits for the planet too:

For a daily coffee drinker, per year:

   - 75% less CO2 during the production of Lupi Coffee VS a classic coffee

   - 13,000 L of water used (=1 shower of 3 min/day) VS 126,000 L of water for coffee (=2 baths/day)

   - 0 L of water polluted with lupin: no need for fertilizers or pesticides for its cultivation

   - 78% less floor space used (19m² against 88m² for coffee)

Coffee has a strong ecological footprint, it should not be a mass product in a world aware of its impact on living things.

LUPI COFFEE, a very new adventure!

Anaïs - the founder of Lupi - comes from Lille and has been a great coffee lover since her childhood. When she became pregnant, she searched tirelessly for an alternative to coffee, but never managed to recreate the taste and experience of real coffee.

Visiting her German in-laws, she then discovered coffee made from lupin flowers: it was a revelation. Not finding it on returning to France, Alice decides to leave everything and start her own company, a dream that had been running through her head for a while. Alice wanted to create a project in her image, something that is good for people and the planet. She then launched a crowdfunding campaign on Ulule in early 2022 (that's how we met her!), it's a success: campaign funded at 1347%!!

The product is a success, the public is there, that's how the first production of LUPI was born and will soon be in your hands!

But how is this lupin coffee made?
