🌊 How is this sea water harvested?

The Ibiza & Formentera Agua de Mar company was created by Alfonso and David following health problems that were greatly improved thanks to marine plasma. They therefore pay very particular attention to the quality of this seawater and respect the biological and subtle phenomena of the water as much as possible in order to keep all of its trace elements, minerals and beneficial elements intact.

Harvesting in the open sea far from beaches and overly inhabited areas, collection at 5 m depth in areas of concentration of plankton, no harvesting in summer when it is too hot... These are some of the very precise parameters they follow for each harvest.
The water is then micro-filtered between 4 and 5°C (when the density is best) then left to rest before being bottled.

Very thorough checks are carried out on each batch to guarantee water free of pollutants, hydrocarbons, micro-plastics, heavy metals and even pathogens.

🌊 Where is this sea water harvested?

The islands of Ibiza and Formentera were not chosen by coincidence for the harvesting of marine plasma. It is important that the water comes from the Mediterranean Sea, because it is the only ecosystem bringing together these advantages:
- Posidonia meadows (production of oxygen and capture of CO2)
- protected areas Natura 2000, UNESCO and "marine protected areas"
- very restrictive railway regulations (products used and traffic)
- no nuclear pollution

The harvest is mainly done on the west side of the island of Ibiza, the area richest in Posidonia seagrass beds, in plankton and therefore in marine life, and where the sea currents keep the sea water perfectly clean.

🌊 How to use it?

Bag-in-Box seawater is recommended for cooking and food use. Ideal for people who want to limit their consumption of traditional table salt.
Very practical with its pouring tap, it is easy to add a small quantity of marine plasma to any preparation. Salt your soups, dishes, vegetable juices, vegetable pâtés, sauces, etc. with plasma rather than conventional salt. A simple gesture for a body that stays healthy.
It is the perfect ingredient for your lacto-fermentations!
In the kitchen, seawater enhances and improves the taste of many foods without masking their authentic taste. On the other hand, it is not advisable to cook it, add it at the end of preparation (it loses chelating properties above 60°C).

You can also dilute it to use it in isotonia (= marine plasma at the same concentration as blood plasma).

🌊 How to get isotonic marine plasma?

The formula for obtaining Isotonic Marine Plasma from Ibiza & Formentera Hypertonic Marine Plasma is as follows:
mix 1/4 hypertonic marine plasma + 3/4 spring water.

> For example for 1L of iso plasma = 250 mL of hypertonic + 750 mL of spring water

We are like isotonic sea water: that is to say that our blood plasma contains about 9 gr/L of mineral salts, compared to sea water which contains about 36 gr/L, the proportions of the various trace elements are similar to blood.

We recommend keeping your isotonic water in a bottle in the fridge for 24 hours only.

🌊 What differences between the bottle, the BIB and Quinton water?

This is one of the most frequently asked questions. Here is a quick comparison to help you see more clearly:

The René Quinton process is a registered patent. It uses double filtration under very controlled conditions and more than 100 parameters are evaluated post-harvest. This therefore requires a special certification to be able to affix this name.
The Ibiza & Formentera bottled marine plasma, with its ultra-filtration, is the one that uses the same process. Its final quality is almost identical and can therefore be used in the same way as Quinton water.


Sea water has such a varied chemical composition that it cannot be synthesized artificially. What does this mean exactly?
Sea water cannot be manufactured, as it contains many trace elements that make an “industrial” or “domestic” synthesis – i.e. mixing water with salt and minerals – unlikely. Such a mixture is simply salt water which does not contain the specific properties of sea water.
The salt that we can buy does not contain all the mineral salts and trace elements already dissolved in sea water. The majority of commercial salt loses during processing, drying and refining, a large part of the components contained in sea water, leaving only sodium and chlorine. And not to mention the addition of additives of certain brands.
So ordinary salt, even of marine origin, is nothing like sea water: it is simply sodium chloride (NaCl).


The internal environment of the body and sea water perform the same functions, one in relation to the cells, the other in relation to the micro-organisms of the marine ecosystem. In both cases, it is a question of maintaining the physical and chemical conditions in accordance with the development of life.

Both are therefore mineral media whose homeostasis and chemical structure result from biological regulation.
In addition, the analysis shows that the compositions of sea water, blood plasma and interstitial fluid in humans are similar.

When we study the chemical structure of sea water, two constants emerge:

- On the one hand, the salts that make up the saline matrix of marine waters have a different solubility product from that of the same salts dissolved in distilled water = the solubility is not the same when taking sea water and water having the same composition (artificially).
Therefore, the hydration of sea salts is not only due to their specific nature, but also owes its particular properties to the transformation of these elements within the cycles of the ecosystem. We are talking about the dynamization of the marine elements.
In fact, the saline matrix of marine waters constitutes a unique natural environment that is practically impossible to reproduce artificially. This specific hydration of the salts conditions the physical characteristics of the water itself, the substrate of the metabolism.

- On the other hand, the nature of the salts and the way in which the various elements are present in the saline matrix of marine waters, are close to what is found in the internal environment of the body.

What is plasma?

Our blood is made up of red and white blood cells and platelets, all suspended in blood plasma, the liquid which is the true means of transportation for all these blood cells.
Plasma, on the other hand, is made up of 90% water and a multitude of compounds: trace elements and dissolved ions, carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, metabolic waste, hormones, etc.

From a therapeutic point of view, it is precisely the specific form of trace elements and mineral salts that interests us, because we are looking for the action they induce. This is the fundamental assumption on which the whole study of the concept of marine plasma is based and which was presented for the first time in 1897 by René Quinton:
"There is a physiological identity between marine plasma and human plasma"
that is to say that marine plasma has the same ability as human plasma to serve as a mineral support for cellular life.

Minerals are the "fuel" used primarily by our body, which is necessary for our cells to perform their functions optimally. They are also essential for the absorption of vitamins and are responsible for enzymatic processes in cells. Cells perform all their functions with maximum vitality and the precise capacity for organic, bioavailable, alkaline cellular nutrition.

Another of the great benefits of sea water is its pH.
As Otto Warbürg, father of cellular respiration and two-time Nobel laureate, said, “all diseases are acidic and where there is oxygen and alkalinity there can be no disease”.
Due to the quality of our raw material, the hyper-oxygenated waters of the posidonia meadows and sea currents provide purity and clarity: the Ibiza and Formentera Agua de Mar plasmas have an alkaline pH, between 8.1 and 8.4, which will help the body maintain a neutral pH through homeostasis. The ingestion of sea water is advised to control and maintain our PH, as well as an exceptional supplement for alkaline diets.

The antioxidant and anti-acidity power produced by seawater is due to the alkalinity provided by the minerals.
Drinking filtered sea water in a direct and controlled way is very beneficial for health, because sea water is an excellent nutrient, containing all the minerals of the periodic table and all dissolved in the best existing universal solvent: the water.

Sea water also helps us stay young, for a simple reason: the body regularly and cyclically regenerates all its cells, because their lifespan is limited in time. As we age, one of the first faculties the cell loses is the ability to hydrate. We know that the older we get, the less we drink. So drinking and ingesting sea water can help us "awaken" that ability to hydrate ourselves, which we naturally have when we are young.
Sea water contains between 35 and 38 grams/litre of dissolved salts.

If our internal environment becomes acidic, the first thing the body will try to do is make its pH alkaline and, how does it do that?
It mainly uses its calcium reserves to extinguish this "fire", and this calcium is most easily found for the organism in the first available resource, the bones. It is easy to understand that this mechanism leads to weaknesses.
By ingesting sea water, we can control and maintain our pH, keep our bones healthy, and improve our digestion. This is why it is so important to have alkaline foods in our diet. Different universities are currently studying the nutritional and therapeutic benefits of sea water, such as the University of Malaga, La Laguna (Tenerife), Antioquia (Colombia) and Nouatchot (Mauritania).
Common characteristics between blood and sea water are homeostasis (self-regulation of properties), specific and similar presence of trace elements (essential chemical element), antibiotic and self-regenerative power.



Our Ibiza suppliers collect sea water by boat in the best possible conditions, which come close to René Quinton's recommendations. At first glance and unless denied, only five companies in the world harvest like this by boat (the others collect from the coast). In addition, they use the most advanced technologies in terms of "sensitive" water analysis, being the representatives in Spain of the Masaru Emoto Foundation and being the only ones in Spain to have a dark field microscope.
As far as the process is concerned: the water is captured at the right time on the high seas, in an area between 40 and 200 meters depth, the capture takes place between 5 and 25 meters depth, in areas favored by their great stability in the composition of minerals.

Following our meeting with our suppliers, we were very surprised at the different existing practices for harvesting sea water around the world. We look for the best international suppliers for all our products and we go on site all over the world to see how they work and when it does not suit us, we impose our own specifications (such as for olive wood plates, seaweed dehydrated at less than 40°C, coconuts, etc.) so that the quality is optimal.

According to our information, many European companies pump water from ports, beaches, the coast, sea water desalination units, or even from saline wells in the ground.

Our supplier harvests hypertonic marine plasma by boat in areas where planktonic activity is at its maximum and where posidonia meadows provide excellent oxygenation. That being said, the harvest in a vortex, which is the icing on the cake, is not 100% guaranteed, it may be partial or even absent when the boat arrives in these areas of very intense marine life. The reason is a material reason, the vortexes being of variable, ephemeral and random durations, they do not make it possible to collect water for a very long time and over too large volumes. The arguments you may find here and there about harvesting in vortexes from the shore (not by boat) deserve a closer look...

Our suppliers also use four water quality analysis methods:

Here is a very simple question to ask your usual marine plasma supplier to see more clearly:

« How and under what conditions is the sea water taken from you, do you have photos or videos of your boats and your harvests? »

The harvesting of the best quality marine plasma must be done on particular sites in the presence of high concentrations of plankton (blooms) which appear spontaneously after a few days of good weather without wind and in certain seasons (not in summer, the water is too hot) in specific places where sea currents conducive to the formation of mobile vortexes (such as cyclones) meet.
Plankton vortexes and blooms are natural and ephemeral phenomena that occur in certain places only when these particular conditions are met. You have to be in the right place, at the right time. A boat seems to me to be the only serious possibility to be able to harvest in this way.

There is always a lot, a lot of information on the location, the transformation of sea water, and its multiple uses among the companies that market it, I have never seen a single photo or video of a harvesting boat and the exact and precise methods of the harvest are very rarely mentioned, whereas for me these are primordial and essential points.

As an agronomist, these are always the points that interest me: sourcing of the highest possible quality.

Packaged in Bag-in-Box (BIB): 100% recyclable high-density polyethylene bag, with pouring tap, protected by 100% recyclable cardboard.

The non-air system guarantees total purity of the liquid down to the last drop because air does not enter the container as it is drawn.
The possibility of water contamination by the introduction of ambient air inside the container is almost nil. In this way, the sea water consumption period is greatly extended once the Bag-in-Box is opened.

- Ecology:

The various analyzes of the life cycle of BIBs versus glass bottles (75 cL) show a pronounced advantage for the former.
> Carbon footprint 8 times lower than that of glass.
> Reduction in the weight of packaging, and therefore in energy consumption during transport.
> Optimization of transport: before filling, bags and boxes are delivered flat, so fewer trucks are needed to deliver the same quantity of BIBs; after filling, the rectangle format makes it possible to optimize palletization. A truck transporting 5 liter BIBs is equivalent to more than 7 trucks transporting 75 cl bottles.
> Limits food waste thanks to its "service on demand" and extended storage system.
> 100% recyclable: if they are well sorted, both the cardboard and the pocket are very easily recyclable in France.
> Energy efficient: unlike glass, it takes less energy to produce a BIB, for the same quantity of liquid transported.
> Avoid wild pollution: due to its large format, it is extremely unlikely to find the packaging in nature, thrown in the street or in the sea. Unlike conventional plastic food packaging, it is almost certain that it will not will not leave the recycling/household waste chain.

- Concerning plastic:

A multitude of plastics of very different qualities exist on the food market. Our BIBs are made of high density polyethylene (HDPE), suitable for food contact, it is the highest quality plastic which is very resistant to seawater: no migration of plastic substance by leaching has been detected.

PET: Polyethylene Terephthalate is the most common type of plastic in food packaging.
Very strongly not recommended - the cheapest

It is commonly found in soft drink bottles, water bottles, cooking oil bottles. Risks: may release antimony, benzene. At certain temperatures and depending on the type of "liquid", the migration is very high.
In the case of sea water, the use is discouraged, since the high salinity and the capacity of sea water as a solvent allow the migration of toxic substances from PET plastic in a strongly accelerated manner. The main compounds released are: Antimony, Formaldehyde, Acetaldehyde, Trihalomethane compounds.
Using such plastic to condition sea water is simply not acceptable.
